It has been a little over 30 years since digital technology has been implemented into our education system, and since its rather primitive beginning, it has grown and developed on an exponential level.
The invention of the computer changed the game entirely.
With the introduction of the personal computer, the educators were able to create a progressive and efficient pathway to the pursuit of knowledge. Thus…

E-Learning was born. This merger of education and technology made the students access to virtually limitless data, increased connectivity, multimedia platforms, and so much more!

THE PAST

Although the possibility of E-Learning is owed to the invention of the computer, the core concept of online learning dates back to…

Victorian England.
Alright so they probably didn’t use computers.
The teachers would send instructions via mail, and the students would complete the given assignments and send it back. This practice is called “distance learning”, and it is the predecessor of the E-Learning we know today.

As mentioned earlier, this idea of distance learning all kicked into gear in the 80’s with the widespread use of the personal computers. People were captivated by the idea of this new machinery, and it wasn’t long till schools began implementing this shiny new tech into their education systems.
However, it’s also important to note that Technological hardware is merely a tool in our education system, and we shouldn’t rely on it entirely.

Over time, this merger between the two would eventually develop into what is known as E-Learning, and its widespread use can be observed with schools and companies today.

THE PRESENT

More and more schools are starting to incorporate E-Learning into their curriculum.
As a matter of fact, more and more students are being enrolled in online schooling. A study done by the Babson Survey Research Group showed that there was a 3.9% increase in students enrolling in online education from 2013 to 2014 alone!

In addition to schools, many companies recognize the potential benefits of E-Learning and are quick to adapt. Today, approximately 77% of U.S. companies use E-Learning as a form of training.
Perhaps the biggest benefit eLearning has to offer is that it is incredibly cost-effective.
“Perhaps the biggest benefit eLearning has to offer is that it is incredibly cost-effective.”
In a survey done by the U.S. Department of Education, The Walled Lake Consolidated School District, Michigan, made it possible for the students to 2 online courses in addition to the courses offered in classrooms.
This resulted in the district saving about $517 per student.

Another massive benefit of E-Learning is that it is incredibly flexible!
Through simple and affordable translation and transcription, the online platform makes education accessible to everyone and anyone around the globe. Those who lack the proper resources to pay for pricey schooling simply need a screen and a keyboard.
This also means that the user isn’t bound to a single location. E-Learning is completely global!

Further adding to its flexibility, E-Learning courses can be repeated as many times as the user desires. Lessons can be repeated until the student has a complete understanding of the material.

THE FUTURE

Educators are constantly thinking of new and innovative approaches to online education.
E-Learning is shaping the future of technology in the classroom.
The mass expansion of technology also makes it possible to connect the education design with a tangible and engaging experience for the students.
Technological innovations will always continue, and education will be alongside it every step of the way.
The future of technology in schools is nothing short of exciting. More and more schools and companies are incorporating some form of E-Learning to the curriculum. 48 out the 50 states in America support online learning opportunities, and it won’t be long until all 50 see the benefit and potential it has to offer.
The demand for technology integrated learning is growing ever higher. Technologies in classrooms have certainly come a long way from the days of the simple Macintosh. With the ease of accessibility, education will hopefully one day, be available to all.
