Howdy! I’m Derek, a husband/daddy/runner/Trekky/writer from Pleasant Grove, Utah. Having spent two years in Peru learning Spanish, I have a passion for foreign cultures and am excited to jump into an industry where I can put that to work for me.
As mentioned, after turning 19, I spent two years as an LDS missionary in Peru. I returned with much more than a severely-sunburned nose and love for lomo saltado—the experiences I had influenced me physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually and continue to impact my life today.
After returning home in 2010 and watching the new Star Trek movie (which cruelly came out a year before I got back), I promptly resumed my studies of public relations at Brigham Young University. Less than a year later, I found myself doing a marketing content internship for PMA Media Group. I often helped edit the writing of the other part-time writers on our team.
One fateful day, I edited an article that would change my life. I was immediately intrigued by the author’s excellent spelling, grammar, and content. I Facebook-stalked her (since she worked the morning shift and I worked the afternoon at that time), and eventually asked her out. Long-story- short, we got married a year later. I’m absolutely smitten with her still, four years later.
I’ve come a long way in life since my teenage years—about 3 miles to be exact (which is the distance between my parents’ house in American Fork and where my wife and I currently live). Eden joined the family in 2014 and Jaron joined us in 2016. I’m still waiting for the day when a little Jack Russell Terrier puppy can join us, but unfortunately, Jenni doesn’t like the idea of the fur getting everywhere. I’m still working on that front.
At some point in the last six years, I really started picking up running. I’ve pounded about 2,000 miles of pavement in the past four years, which has included two marathons, two half-marathons, and at least a dozen 10Ks or 5Ks. I love following BYU Track and Cross Country and was ecstatic when Jared Ward made the U.S. Olympic Marathon team. I’m thrilled to join inWhatLanguage and hope that I can make a valuable contribution!
We are excited to have you join our team, Derek! Welcome to inWhatLanguage.
